SMALL TOWN YOGINI

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. One of my favorite things to say. If you've been practicing yoga for a while, then chances are good you've heard this often used chant. It pops up in songs, classes, meditations, and even yoga gear. If you've heard it, but aren't familiar with the meaning, read on for a translation. It's beautiful.

I teach yoga in a small town, and I know that sometimes chants or words from sanskrit can make people feel uncomfortable until they know what it means. It can come across as very woo-woo and mystical. I understand this. For that reason, I like to make sure that anything I use in class is well explained. This way, if it resonates with them, they can really enjoy it, think on it, and let it sink in. If it doesn't resonate with them, then at least they aren't confused or offended by it.That is my hope for this whole category that I write in occasionally: Decoding Yoga. The next time you hear Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu,  I hope you remember the beautiful meaning behind it.

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, translated:
May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.

Isn't that beautiful? It's a blessing for others. A blessing of love that you're sending out for the whole world. It acknowledges that you contribute to the world and what you put out into the world matters. It acknowledges that we are all connected.What if we really lived by this?
